Ooh.

Did you get goosebumps? I got goosebumps.

Clearly I need to be paying more attention to Makoto Shinkai.

since 2002, he's been my favorite director. Beyond the Clouds, The Promised Place totally blew my mind.

Oh man, innit though? I dunno about people calling him the next Miyazaki, but he IS consistently breathtaking.

I think both Voices and Beyond are licensed!

Makoto Shinkai is the dude who exploded onto the scene with Voices of a Distant Star, and then made The Place Promised In Our Early Days (known in Japanese as [livejournal.com profile] nagashi refers to it above) which I haven't yet seen but which looks equally stunning. This is a teaser for his newest thing.

Looks rather shiny!

That is very shiny. And wee, I watched it once and then pulled out the Japanese dictionaries and watched it a second time, using the pause button at all the on-screen text. :)

On that note, do you understand the どれほどの速さ in the text on-screen? Is it asking "If you live with that speed [the speed of falling cherry blossoms], will I be able to see you again?"

I think どれほど generally means 'how much', in this case "How far apart can we live for me to (still) be able to meet you again?" Not a phrase that goes well into English, so a more coherent phrasing: "How far apart can we go before we're separated forever?"

Or wait, I was reading 速い as 遠い for no good reason. XD; So, and this makes much more sense: "How fast do I have to live for me to be able to meet you again?" A throwback to Voices of a Distant Star where the couple was literally living at different speeds, I suppose.
