God dammit.

I just want to bake something simple. Chocolate. Cake, cookies, loaf, anything. God dammit, internet, quit making this shit harder than it needs to be.

For someone who can't find buttermilk, sour cream, peanut butter, molasses, normal cake mix, or probably a fucking working oven. And whose Japanese still isn't good enough to figure out which fucking white powder is baking soda. What happened to simple recipes? I swear the internet used to have them.

I miss home today.

Brownies? Here's the recipe my mother gave me for brownies (passover brownies, but they taste fine!):

2C sugar
2 sticks butter or margarine, melted and cooled
3 eggs
1 T brewed coffee (or water)
3/4 C cocoa powder 1/2C finely chopped walnuts (optional)
1/4t salt
1 c matzoh cake meal
Preheat oven to 350, Lightly grease 8in square pan.

For the brownies: mix sugar into melted butter, add eggs, coffee, nuts
(if using) cocoa, salt, cake meal. Spoon bater into prepared pan, bake
approx 25 mins until set and seem dry to the touch. Cool in the pan.

Frost: 2/3C coffee or water. 7 ox semi-sweet choc. 2T butter or marg.

Boil water, reduce heat and add choc. Remove pan from the heat and melt
the choc. Cool the choc mixture, Stir in butter.
Spread the frosting on top of the cooled brownies.

Frosting's optional, I'm sure you can substitute flour for matzah cake meal.

I'm a fan of biscotti (http://bbcookbook.livejournal.com/21996.html) for an easy baking project. Will require an oven, as well as baking powder. As for distinguishing Japanese-labeled white powders, both baking soda and baking powder will fizz when sprinkled into vinegar, although baking soda fizzes much more vigorously. Baking powder also fizzes in plain water. Baking soda also has a sharper bitter taste, while baking powder has a more acidic, sour taste. At least according to my impromptu 3:30 in the morning tests.
