Color Walk scans.

Scans of One Piece Color Walk 1! Mostly the Early Days pages. Long, pic-heavy post.

This is the start of the Early Days section, the drafts and redrafts before One Piece was One Piece.

Yeah, I like this version better too.

But, dude, once upon a time Zoro had ANTLERS. I'm not so sure about the doubled-up cape + mantle (didn't Nami wear that pink thing in Alabasta?) but the antlers: Awesome. Also, matching geta and sheathes, yeah color sense. The scans really don't convey how wonderfully vibrant all the colors are. The book's aptly named.

Again, protagonist-type looks more like Shanks than Luffy. Bionic Nami FTW. She's like OP and FMA had fantastic, scary babies.

I like this matchup the best.

Zoro's younger now, I guess, and part of that design must've gone into Shanks. Nami's older, smarter, even in this picture just a smidge less innocent. (I think the braid takes off a year or so.) And look at the difference in Luffy's face.

Rough translation of the blurb:
["Land ho!!!"
--These are pirates I just drew, back in the day.
Because I just kinda drew them,
I used these clothes for the main character of the pirate manga that came afterwards.
I called him Luffy.
It just felt right.
I never had to force it,
because I was only trying to draw the pirates I'd always had in my head,
just the way they were.
Their adventure begins from here.
Because-- they see land.]

One last pic. This scan isn't mine; Going Meri with One Piece has much better ones than I. But now that I have the artbooks, I have the blurbs that go with the pics, and this one is just too cute.

[Yes, we know this guy. Monkey D. Luffy is very bad at drawing.
He can't even draw a good skull and crossbones.
Truth is, in this picture, Luffy tried to draw a face that looked like Zoro.
---Man, he is really bad at drawing.
That almost looks like a skull and crossbones.
I guess he might've actually gotten a doodle right for once?
Nahhh. Nobody would say that.]

D'AHHHH SO CUTE. That Luffy is painting Zoro, that he is painting on a BEAR, that it came out PIRATE, I can't even think what's cutest. Also it's impossible to see in the scan, but that bird on Zoro's knee is angry-faced. Probably bitching at him for letting Luffy paint its poor mate.

Eeeeeeee cute cute cute. Eeee.

Re: Bionic Nami picture: What the fuck, Luffy looks like her belongs in the Old West or Victorian England, or somewhere NOT ONE PIECE. But yes, Bionic Nami is AWESOME. Normal Nami is awesome: Nami who can reach into your ribcage and pull out your heart with her metal hand is even better.

And yes, the Zoro in the pisture under that(well, technically two pictures under it) looks SCARILY like Shanks with an eyepatch and long hair.

WHOA. That's so awesome!! Somebody should write an AU One Piece fic with all those characters! .......... Hmmmm... ::Plot bunnies start to gnaw on brain::

Um, did the book ever show the prototype for Sanji by any chance?

Nothing for certain, I think! There are a couple of weird-featured bionic mad-scientist wacky people who might've split into pieces and grew into Usopp and Chopper and a few villains besides, and there are lots and lots of Shanks-style pirates, but the only one who might concievably have hints of Sanji is a guy with a pipe, a kneepad, and Zoro's earrings.

OOh! Can you post those up, too? Please, please, please? Pretty please? At least, the Sanji with the pipe.

...If not for me, do it for all the curly eye brow, bad ass cooks out there. :,O

Aaaand Proto Usopp/Chopper/general mad scientist. Who am I to resist the Chopper eyes?

I really think Sanji in particular, as a character, must've just formed up later. Luffy, too. These characters are just what might have been.

These are really awesome! ^__^ I'm still fangirling over the bionic Nami.

And, is it just me or is the Sanji prototype very young looking?

[identity profile] arks.livejournal.com 2006-04-01 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, those wacky bionics. Ed/Bellemere OTP

He is! He really is. Save for the obvious Zoros, most of these people seem to be around the age of the dragonrider at the start. Sanji may have actually been fairly young, when he started out, but he never looked so quietly spacy.

Come to think of it, we never really see him space out at all. He's always got three things to do.

I know what you mean. Prototype Sanji seems very melllow in that picture. Like, his personality is a cross with Robin it seems.

[identity profile] arks.livejournal.com 2006-04-01 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Does Robin space a lot?

<== Totally on ep145, sad.
