OH GOD HERE IT IS

The insane, wacko-crazy Teen Titans essay. I would love any comments whatsoever ;3; so please please read and tell me what you think. I owe this one to Wife, to Childwife, and to the inspiration in Berlin. I was thinking of calling it...

Berlin Day 3

Ahaahahaha oh gawd today was outstandingly awesome even by my recent standards. So I was walking west to pick up about where I'd left off yesterday just past Museum Island, and I saw a couple of fairly big birds hopping around the dirtpath back way I'd found through one block, and they were kind of pretty, and then one of them took off and I swear the first thing I thought was "hey, that bird has Nightwing markings!" Which, alright yes, DORK, but they WERE a big V-mark across the chest with highlights on wings and tail.

I went past a booksale at Humboldt Uni, through a good bit of fun historical Berlin, and ended up at the Reichstag Building. Which, holy SHIT, guys, the Bundestag gets to do their Parliament thing in the best building in the world period. It is an ancient stone legislative building, rebuilt from the inside in modernist style. The effect is a massively impressive classical building shell with a glass and fantastically modern core. Its dome is glass. That's the main bit free to the public.

So I went up onto the roof, and up into the dome, and up up up the ramp into the cupola, which has 360 deg view and open-air roof. And a circular bench in the middle designed, I swear to god, for taking naps. I didn't but I came PRETTY CLOSE. And I wandered back down, realized I wasn't half done admiring the awesomeness of the entire structure - there's a cone of 360 huge mirrors in the middle of this dome, base at the cupola, tapering downwards. They reduce glare and reflect light into the main parliament chamber. They are also beautiful.

So I wandered my butt right back up, and sat down to write.

An hour later the sun was setting and I sat up, looked around, and promptly reread the complete first draft of that Teen Titans: Trouble In Tokyo allegory essay I have been promising myself I would write for MONTHS. It is done, I will type it up, I am so proud. Thank you, Berlin, for enabling this level of TOTAL GEEK.

And then I drifted back downstairs for a long, leisurely walk through the Tiergarten. Which is beyond gorgeous, by the way, particularly during a two-hour sunset, and also has bunnies.

On the way to the Tiergarten two Americans were talking about a pretty bird hopping around the Bundestag lawn. The man said "Ah, but that's a magpie, they're trouble." Realizing suddenly I would need to know what a magpie actually LOOKS like in order to write one as a supervillain, I looked over.

And there was the bird with Nightwing markings.

/o/ THAT'S IT. THE WORLD WINS. I LOVE THE WORLD.

ps After dinner on the other side of the Tiergarten I got lost. My map didn't go that far out. I stuck to bigger streets, found a bus station, looked at the map, and made my way over to the Hauptbahnhof- and realized halfway there that I could have just turned on Data Roaming and had the iPhone display me a Google Map at any time. Ahaha. Still! It is supernice to know that I can navigate an unhelpful neighborhood of a foreign city, in the dark, with no map. Even if it is a German city. And besides I am generally pretty leery of pulling out my Mug Me, I'm An American Tourist! device under anything like suspicious circumstances. Which totally include a poorly lit area with a graffiti'd church and a huge, old, strong building with the kind of watchtower-and-barbed-wire-studded wall indicative of a penitentiary, or Arkham Asylum.

Yep. Awesome day all around.

Mmmmm

So, I picked myself up off the sofabed after buying my plane tickets to get out of here the day after graduation, because no matter how comfy it is to stretch out on softness and plan my crazy post-grad summer, sometimes a girl just needs butterscotch chips. As I got up, I accidentally knocked three Batman comics to the floor - one of them is Gotham by Gaslight, a 100-years-earlier Batman in which the Dark Knight takes on Jack The Ripper.

Meanwhile [livejournal.com profile] tmartian42 is playing Katamari in the background at the end of a lovely quiet evening of passing around the Katamari controller, post-celebration of Tom Lehrer's 80th birthday.

Sometimes, friendslist, life is just really nice. And I try to sit up and notice when it's this obvious.

I've read them, enjoyed them, and now I want someone else to enjoy them too. Please, take a look, and tell me if you're interested.

I do Paypal and money orders. Cross-posted flippin' everywhere.

HARVEY DENT FOR DA

X'D

Okay so

I just did something kind of terrible to a very sweet girl in my Civ class. She's a sophomore and always positive and upbeat and we're pretty good casual friends. And we're coming out of class talking about break and I mention the pillow fight and that there was a political rally there! Because what better way to get the young vote, am I right. And she goes Yeah, that's a great idea, who was it for? And I go, Harvey Dent for Gotham City DA. And show off my campaign pin on my bag. And she goes oh cool, uh-huh! Nodding along.

And I go all casual. Have you heard of him? No, she admits, so tell me about him, what's he like?

Well, gee, how to explain Harvey Dent. I take the pause to think. Is he a good guy? Or is he kind of a douchebag. she asks, all ready for the hard truth.

Well, he's really tough on crime, y'know? Kind of a hard-ass. And maybe you don't want that in SOME positions, though our governor was KIND OF doing okay with that (we divert into Spitzer talk for a moment and then go back to Dent) anyway, I think it's good to have a hardass for your DA! And he's not a BAD guy, he got where he is by being friends with all the right people, you know? Philanthropists. Rich guys who aren't douchebags. She nods along.

I like him, anyway (we talk about Spitzer more, how his downfall was this incredible disassociation between his public works and private misdeeds) and I do admit, I've been kind of watching Dent for awhile, and I think maybe that split could happen with him too! Between public and private personas. But y'know. So long as he doesn't do anything dangerous, illegal and stupid with that private life (we laugh about Spitzer.)

But wiki him, yeah? See what you think. I will, says she, armed and ready to go inform herself. I will wikipedia this guy and when we come to class on Wednesday, I will be all, "I wiki'd Harvey Dent." And we grin at each other

for entirely different reasons

and go our separate ways.

She is probably wiki'ing him right now.

I should feel terrible and I don't, I just don't.

I will be laughing about this so hard for such a long time. She is going to come to class on Wednesday and hate me, just hate me (for like thirty seconds).

Aw man. Life? Is pretty hilarious.

Happy day!

Okay you guys

So I just had the best day, ever, period. So freaking awesome. I met up with [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_x &co at the Guggenheim and saw the Cai Guo-Qiang exhibit in all its glory- no webpage can explain or truly exhibit this and I exhort you all, if you are anywhere near NYC, to GO SEE THIS SHOW before it is gone. This man lit'rally makes explosions and explosives his medium for artwork. There are other beautiful and stunningly thought-provoking things he does, taxidermy and construction and clay sculpture. Go see, go see.

And then we went to Union Square for THE PILLOW FIGHT. A clutch of strangers with pillows thwapping each other, feathers EVERYWHERE, feathers drifting up into the air and blowing along with the wind and making a SIGNAL for where the fight was. It was beautiful.

And what should we see there on the edge of it? What should be parading along the side, chanting slogans and waving signs? Why, a campaign rally, of course – for what better way to reach The Youth than to campaign at an internets-organized pillow fight? And for whom, pray tell, are these fresh-faced activists-in-training cheering?

Why, Harvey Dent for District Attorney, of course!!

We got stickers and bumper stickers. Gotham City News was covering it, and the pillow fight behind it, as a strange escalation in the tense race for DA. Vicki Vale, on the scene, seriously for real you guys. I thought my face was gonna crack I was grinning so hard.

We took a time-out for food and Forbidden Planet, 'cuz why go to Union Square and not buy comics, amirite. They have a life-size Dalek in there now. I got some Teen Titans because I hadn't had enough Bart Allen in my life lately. And, you know, can never have enough Drake. Picked up some free Harvey for DA campaign buttons at the counter.

And then it was back to the pillow fight. We waded in and got to sit in the big pile in the middle. Feathers EVERYWHERE, cannot emphasize this enough - a guy on the subway afterward asked if we'd been attacked by birds. Whumpf bumpf shoompf! There goes another pillow, a cloud released into the blizzard. Every time one gets thrown out of the ring, some helpful soul throws it right back in and beans a combatant on the way. One pillow said OBAMA BOMB. One said 'デクスタ' on one side and '暗' on the other and had small bloodstains, very mysterious. One crowd favorite was bright red silk with Chinese characters all over it. THE FEATHERS. Trails of foam mixed in.

Ahhhhhh. A glorious, glorious day all around. And tomorrow is Easter. =DDD

Everything's worked out just as it should.

Confessions

From what I've read so far, Saint Augustine's Confessions is kind of sick. It's a long, mildly terrifying ramble addressed to God, written by a man honestly attempting to take all of the Bible literally all at once.

Yea.

Looks like there's going to be a lot more of 'I hurt myself because I love you, so that you may love me' than what I've seen so far. Cutters for Jesus, srsly.

But you know, after having just finished Phoenix Wright...

... some of these passages just read silly. )

p.s. Frying bread in butta does not work, though it does still make delicious. Frying bread that's already had some garlic salt shaken into it in the afore-tried canola oil works like awesome and uNF that's good.

nnnnnAAGH.

I snapped awake, and listened. Carefully.

And then I rolled out of bed and killed the roach. Ground its head half off with a handy shoe.

Puttered around the room, stopped, listened. And then pulled the bag out of the trash and ground the scrabbling remainder into paste.

In other news, I must've been exhausted; I fell asleep with the experimental Nami tattoo still on. Fortunately the hairspray seems to be a good fixative; no smearing on anything else at all and only a little flaking off! Also that makes two nights in a row. Last night I went out with studio people with the Nami-tat on my arm, and the night before I went out with mom wearing the casual MODE outfit in celebration of shoooes. Casual means that the skirt was nonskanky and the Log Pose was left off because it is still in pieces. Need to fix that this week. Anyway it is fun to do public cosplay with shit like Nami because it is so simple and casual it is like sekrit code.

Anyway now it's 2am and I'm awake. Whoooo.

Dude.

I am now in possession of a 106-year-old drill book for learning shorthand. Oh, who never grew out of wanting to know seekrit codes? That would be me. 8D

Along with this is a nearly equally aged book of illustrated ettiquette problems, full of pretty pictures and tiny details of the kind I absolutely adore. A sample:

The etiquette of the tea-room and roof garden is very much like the etiquette of the restaurant and hotel dining-room.  )

The woman has hat, gloves, and cape. Don't ask me why the rest of it is so fascinating because I don't know, but women's clothing circa 1922 is really, really pretty. And graceful. And in many instances hawt. Sure, they don't get to wear pants, but their skirts are light and pretty and knee-length and everyone seems to have believed in trailing things. I really like trailing things. Fringed capes and scarves and fluttering veils and even hats with the right amount of wavy things are just lovely all over. Now if only everyone's hair weren't sculpted and then plastered down I would go for the whole style.

Hippo birdies two mi!

So I went to bed at what, 6.30am, and woke up maybe half an hour ago. Mmm.

My brother just served me breakfast in bed. Warm cinnamon rolls, fresh out of the oven. ♥

Looks like it's gonna be a good birthday.

ps I suck at eljay layouts~! Wheeeeeeee. Y'know what I want for my birfday? A good-looking earthtones/yellowed-paper layout and a new calm-Nami default icon. Not that anybody should feel obliged, but I mean. Since people were asking.

...also I would like to know how to change journal title, since LJ has apparently taken that option off! =O

End of the carnival.

So. That was awesome. I am hella tired. Ended up singing Before Dawn. Have a full 6-person crew + beaded flag on my bag now. Also two new OP volumes + the third artbook, scans to come, and the first volume of Basara. Also a few tiny tiny blisters on my feet.

Time for nap.

Feeling very meta today.

"The word 'fandom' needs to stop existing."

It doesn't really matter where I got this. It's quite likely I'll never cross internet paths with the person who wrote it in my entire online career. I still feel like writing about it.

One of the many things I've learned from translating is that the individual word is not important. It's a front, an often imperfect representation of a broader concept. The act of translation, so far as I can tell, is to deconstruct words into their base concepts, and then to reconstruct that concept in the destination language. More pertinent to this discussion: the act of understanding is simply that first step, the deconstruction of words into nebulous internal concepts.

If this is true, then writing about any particular concept by definition is a reconstruction of the concept back into words. Sometimes I think the definition of skillful writing is a series of words that hints around a concept, bringing the reader's mind to approximate the same concept going through the writer's without the benefit of direct telepathy.

Oh yes. I was going to talk about fandom, before the idea that the erasure of a single word from the common lexicon would be at all effective managed to distract me.

I made a new friend the other day. (=D) She added me on last.fm some time ago, based on our common interest in Final Fantasy music. I was of course perfectly happy to add her back, but didn't think much of it as I don't actually use that site more than twice a month. Last week, though, she commented on a friend's journal and I recognized the screenname. Curious, I checked out her journal- and discovered some of the most consistently excellent and original FF6 artwork I'd ever seen. Icyites, you've seen it too. Hot shit. I ask her "Have you ever been to Icy's? We do arts!"

She responds "I go to Icy's for the translation."

First of all, XD <3 ♥ with an omg on top. But once I had finished blushing like a schoolgirl, I thought to myself, this is fandom.

And I like it here.

Aaaand that's probably ten times more thought than was put into the original remark! Go me.

...Also, I failed at boiled eggs today. Somebody revoke my cooking license.
