Iesous (in the Greek), romanizes and abbreviates to
IHS, from which letters and sounds shift to
JHS, carved into church pews even now, which is sometimes expanded into
–> Jesus Hominum Salvator, a Latin backronym. But it also just shifted into
JHC, from which modern-type folks extrapolate,
"Jesus H. Christ!"
