Oct. 8th, 2008 02:03 amIt's harvest time this week, for the area around my once-weekly elementary-middle school. The English teacher tells me they all take time out from school- really, it's a part of school - to go into the fields and reap with the full village. Everything the kids eat in school lunch, they grow themselves. The pickled plums are from the time they all go up into the mountains and pick them, and then pickle them all themselves too. It's a very natural part of their education.
I would've liked to join them this year. Maybe in winter, when they have a get-together to pound mochi.
