And so.

I return! How are things with you, my English-speaking buddies?

I hope you all had a good summer, or at least a tolerable one. Mine was quite nice - four hours of language class and five hours of language homework every day, interspersed with calligraphy and tai chi. So really it was heaven, for some people. Okay, for me.

I'm trying to catch up on the summer news, but all this ~debt ceiling~ and ~ratings downgrade~ business just looks like so much posturing and political hooey. I wish the dudes who want to kill what's left of the American welfare state would just shoot it already, cut Social Security and Medicare now and be mobbed for their evils. They won't, tho.

London's news is at least real. Russell Brand, of all people, comes close to articulating a portion of my thoughts on the Jobless Generation:

"These young people have no sense of community because they haven’t been given one. They have no stake in society because Cameron’s mentor Margaret Thatcher told us there’s no such thing.

If we don’t want our young people to tear apart our communities then don’t let people in power tear apart the values that hold our communities together."

But his proposed solution is for everyone to suddenly become Gandhi, so fuck him.

I anticipate, with drier detachment than I deserve, many more youth riots to come. Obama's taught us that our votes don't matter; that in the end all our hopey-changey political ambitions only enriched the banks, lost more jobs, and cut our parents' Medicare. What other outlet do we have?

Wow, that went downhill fast. Tell me something that happened in the last two months? I'm sure I'm missing much.

And then we moved approximately two-thirds of a household up one flight of stairs and into our apartment.

Our apartment. It'll sink in eventually. Our. Apartment. That we half-furnished from Craigslist just today. Our apartment.

This kitchen will be epic.

Does Nagoya have a self-image problem?

Anyway. I stopped off at said city to get myself some cash, as the ATM by the station had been closed upon departure. Apparently no cash machines are dispensing today, thanks, Japanese holidays, and so I now set out on a small journey with very little solid money in my pocket. It'll be fun! I can make my way around.

Firefly's pretty good. Little full of itself, yeah. But pretty good.

Asakusa is clever! It has clever bits just everywhere. The buildings do clever things with external staircases. The streetlights have clever little wrappings of blue and red teenylights that are clearly carefully done. The main street may BE yet another hulking 6-8 lane monstrosity, but it doesn't feel like it near so much. Might be the plants, the median, the wide sidewalk, the buildings around. Not quite sure.

It's 18.46 and I really ought to go out and wander a bit more, maybe find some nightlife. But honestly I'd just as rather stretch my sore legs, enjoy my free wi-fi, and chill in prep for tomorrow.

Sometimes it's good to travel slow.

Cuba policy change!!

Decent start! Thanks, dood. Reminding me why we elected you.

An hour's worth of human dignity later, I'm through the international-transfer security in Beijing Airport. That was astoundingly unpleasant.

I admit much of it was watching the guy directly in front of me, a career musician if there ever was one, with purple shoes and a titanium Apple Powerbook stuffed into the front pocket of his electric guitar case, on his way from Bangkok to New York. He wore a baggy overshirt with four pockets and cargo pants with a dozen more, and each pocket had something metal in. Spare change, foil-wrapped nicotine gum, three pack cigs, this and that and on and ON and on.

The guy clearly did not know shit from airport security, so now I feel kinda sorry for him that his first real experience was in freakin' Beijing. Although you'd think, he got on the plane in Bangkok, maybe he'd have caught a clue then?

Oh yes, and while it's on my mind:

When I unite the world under my velvet-clad iron fist, anyone who applies perfume in a crowded economy-class airplane cabin will be squirted with water by the flight attendants.

If the flight has more than five hours to go, they will be doused.

If the flight has more than five hours to go, the legroom is such that we are all packed in like sardines, AND there are more than two babies on board, the perfumed offender will be summarily deplaned.

Vote Lina for Supreme Dictator 2020.

ps Hey, guyneighbor? I know short legroom sucks, believe me. But having such a wide stance that you invade your neighbor's personal space, that is not the answer. And it's just good for you that you didn't get offended when I nudged you and told you to go lean on the window, because you were not falling asleep on me.

More pertinent thoughts on life, the universe, and everything to come. When I am in a country that does not block Livejournal.

pps One-Outs? Kind of a terrible show. Mind games and baseball, sure, but do they have to take an episode and a half for one mind game? Or are they just being dips.

If Sydney were a person, he would be Captain Hammer.

What am I doing in Sydney? Well, I would show you, only I still don't have a camera. >.> I GOT A DISPOSABLE FOR NECESSARY PIX OKAY.

I also got a cool hat.

It is pretty snazzy.

AND! It's not fair, you guys, Sydney has good chocolate everywhere. I think it's been holding out on the rest of us.

Sketched a lot. Gonna break out the watercolors at the Botanical Gardens tomorra. Or maybe just the pastels.

Okay I loveya buh-bye!

p.s. The first thing I had to eat when I got here was a peach.

The second was an empanada.

Life is good.

It's days like this that make me think I could easily work this job for another year.

Which was one reason I signed the form not to recontract today. If I'm still determined to stop after a day as good as this, then I know what I'm doing.

I'm looking through grad schools this week.

And this evening I taught myself Amazing Grace on my new harmonica. Its first song. I've never really played one before.

I finished two more postcards. Gotta spray these puppies and send 'em. I did send a batch off last week, hope you guys like 'em. They're just exceedingly amateurish pastels, that's all, but I think I'm getting better.

Oh, and at least four active rp plots and twice as many apps are in some stage of progress.

Now I just need to finish my Japanese homework, read some more Dostoyevski, play a little more TWEWY, and put together my writing notes over the next ten days.

Going to a friend's house this weekend to try on kimono. I'll try to find my camera by then but it seems it's well and truly lost. Pity.

Hey, [ profile] tmartian42. Let me know when you've a free hour or two in which you feel like RPing, if such a thing occurs? I think the three or four of us could bang out a full scene if we just sat down and traded short tags for a bit.

Hey, [ profile] uncompromisable. I'm not really sure what this shout-out is for, I just want to send affectionate greetings. It seems like I keep contacting you asking for things, and it leads me to ponder what else I could do.

Hey, [ profile] ezelek. Thanks for hauling Hannon's comatose butt around a small forest moon of Endor yesterday. I'll try and schedule kimono fitting for the afternoon so you don't have to do it again. But if you were serious about executing that plot we discussed, then perhaps we could engineer some dramatic, hilarious fashion in which it is The Grumpiest Little Komrade's fault.

I'm home.

Spending the middle part of my day in Shibuya was the RIGHT choice. Navigating by way of little more than my experience in a video game set herein... also turned out awesome! I went into the 109 building solely on basis of it being an important TWEWY landmark, and god damn, people. That building is an experience in itself. It's an inside-out living organism, kind of a writhing flowing pulsating being of chatty shoppers and cheery store clerks and coats and hats and fashion gnomes and pretty boots and faux fur and a million other things. Storefronts sprout so thickly you start to wonder that they don't strangle each other. Brands call for attention, look at me, look at me! and end-of-year sales dial everything up to a code-yellow urgent.

SHIBUYA IS COOL, okay, there are lots of people everywhere . Yes I am a city girl. Scramble Crossing is the kind of area I am absolutely comfortable passing through. And alright, Shibuya in particular would be overstimulating on a daily or weekly basis, yes, because it's like Times Square, times six, only made for real people. Right now, though, I am soaking up the sheer density in stores and people and ads and streets and ideas and chatter and glorious, plush, well-dressed humanity in ways I didn't know were really in me.

Hell yes, Tokyo! I don't know if I want to live in you again, but you are a hella nice city to pass through!

Happy New Year!

We saw a monk seal on the beach at Waikiki.

It was just chillin'.

At one point it whumphed around to face the other direction and stuck its nose into the sand, and then sneezed. *kchwuff*

There was yellow tape up in a perimeter, with signs. 'Don't bug the seals.'

Off to adventure tomorrow. Happy New Year to all.

Believe in miracles

Touchdown: 18.05.
Disembarked: 18.15.
Through quarantine, immigration, customs AND the airport, and
Caught the train at: 18.30 what the hell. ♥

To be fair, I also had my four bits of documentation filled out and at the ready, and I'm something of a preferred member in these things. Told the immigration officer in breezy Japanese that I had a re-entry permit and he bowed me right into the fast lane.

... Preferred member of Japanese immigration. | 'a Rather like the sound of that.

Two trains and some... six hours later, thank you inaka trains and your propensity to be stopped by rain, I am back.

And I have work tomorrow. What shall I tell an elementary school full of newly impressionable youngsters about my home now.

ps Tofu when left in the fridge for two weeks actually ferments, this does not emit a smell but boy o boy does it taste like ancient, crumbling death.

Today we went around a mountain, and then went straight over it to get back.

And then we made donburi with fried tofu in that sugar-shoyu-mirin sauce.

And now we have air conditioning.

Life is really, really good, you guys. Life is so good.

Two weeks

Two weeks today and already my feet know the way home.
arkster: Excited dragon is excited. (Karma will get you back)
Things that would be mild conditions under normal circumstances are hitting me rather hard this week. I gave myself cold shock yesterday, and the resulting headache was enough to knock me out and make me too nauseous for dinner. We went to the beach today, loveliest beach I have ever seen in my life, and the sun plus the drifting around got me a little overheated and queasy, and then we drove over to an ice cream place across winding roads and ick. The whole thing just hit me quite hard. I was lucky to be in the company of such kind and considerate comrades looking after their newbie: one got me water, another gave me ginger pills, and I sat in the AC and took deep breaths and then had matcha and kiwi ice cream to set things right.

Life is still quite good. And I have internet, now!

ps quail eggs are delicious.

Get on a plane tomorra. Thought I'd toss these up before I went.

You rear-ended Barry Allen? )

Off I go.
