Youth

Theresa Helburn

You hear Youth laughing down young budding aisles;
You glimpse her dancing limbs her hair of gold,
The carefree sweet defiance of her smile,
For you are old.

But I can see eyes gray with vague alarm,
Misty with longings that can find no tongue,
The hooded future clutching at her arm,
For I am young.

I have here, on the floor in front of me, a toolbox and a sewing box.

The toolbox contains a dozen screwdrivers, near as many pliers, several pairs of forceps, and a half-dozen items I have no name for. One is cast-iron and appears hand-forged.

The sewing kit has linen thread so old it's patterned with discoloration, and a long, long band of ~Pure Silk Taffeta~ that breaks apart at a touch, like dry toast. And a couple other things I can't name, like a thin tube of thick green paper wound around and around to be thicker in the middle and then glued there.

Plus the usual assortment of old lace.

And a corkscrew.

Lina: whhhhhhh
Lina: the daycare across the street just started playing music in the playground, loud
Lina: it took me awhile to ID it because it's kind of chiptune'd
Koni: The toddlers are tearing it up?
Lina: it's the PotC theme.
Koni: ...Pirate style.

Kero: what are you having for lunch?
Lina: ... I should probably have more than just raw ramen, huh.
Kero: you should put the sauce on it
Lina: I did.

Lina: Some questions just hang in the air
Lina: impossible to answer, like a zen koan
Lina: only demanded, with utterly jawdropped resignation:
Lina: "What do you do with forty-five honorary degree academic hoods??"

Crap. Dangit Mom. Crap.

I love you. So much. But if you send me a Paint Your Own Nesting Dolls set of blanks you know what I HAVE to do with them.

Perfection Wasted

And another regrettable thing about death
is the ceasing of your own brand of magic,
which took a whole life to develop and market --
the quips, the witticisms, the slant
adjusted to a few, those loved ones nearest
the lip of the stage, their soft faces blanched
in the footlight glow, their laughter close to tears,
their tears confused with their diamond earrings,
their warm pooled breath in and out with your heartbeat,
their response and your performance twinned.
The jokes over the phone. The memories
packed in the rapid-access file. The whole act.
Who will do it again? That's it: no one;
imitators and descendants aren't the same.

Today things worked out like BURNING AWESOME. I kept four separate classes of 24+ 7th and 8th graders not only occupied but INTERESTED, 50m each, this was the school everybody warned me about. Everybody. Including their own teacher. Twice. And I TAUGHT THEM ENGLISH and they appeared to WANT TO LEARN IT. \o/ Plus the principal likes me & is impressed, and the office (knowing this principal) is in turn impressed by this!

AND THEN I got care package from the paternal unit. ♥ Photos! Maple syrup! Jelly! CHOCOLATE. asdflk; life is sooooooooo good.

I am a happy tired. |Db

**asdl;jnxcvjklhadfsx raspberry jaaaaaaaaaaaaam ♥ happy, so happy. Happier than the cosmos king with a 100% katamari. so happy.

So keep fightin’ for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don’t you forget to have fun doin’ it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin’ ass and celebratin’ the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was.

I still believe in Hope - mostly because there's no such place as Fingers Crossed, Arkansas.
Molly Ivins

We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we're for them and trying to get them out of there. Hit the streets to protest Bush's proposed surge. If you can, go to the peace march in Washington on Jan. 27. We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, "Stop it, now!"
Molly Ivins, "Stand Up Against the Surge", 1/11/2007. (final column)

I am full of pie.

Other things too. There was turkey in there somewhere. It's hard to remember beyond the holy partnership of pumpkin and lemon merengue.

Happy Thanksgiving, all.

Happy Thanksgiving, all. Go stuff your faces.

May you spend the day with people you love. And pie.
arkster: Excited dragon is excited. (Nami's cheery!)
So I went to bed at what, 6.30am, and woke up maybe half an hour ago. Mmm.

My brother just served me breakfast in bed. Warm cinnamon rolls, fresh out of the oven. ♥

Looks like it's gonna be a good birthday.

ps I suck at eljay layouts~! Wheeeeeeee. Y'know what I want for my birfday? A good-looking earthtones/yellowed-paper layout and a new calm-Nami default icon. Not that anybody should feel obliged, but I mean. Since people were asking.

...also I would like to know how to change journal title, since LJ has apparently taken that option off! =O

How much effort does it TAKE??

I just spent the last twenty minutes following my grandmother around with a box of Band-Aids. What part of YOU ARE BLEEDING is not a high-priority statement?? How hard does she have to make putting on a fucking BAND-AID. AGH.

Also my haircut sucks. Great. Woo.

..........

Island of Slaves was like a poorly written Twelfth Night molested by half a dozen drag queens. Only... it's about slavery.

To be fair, the one costume made entirely out of neon blue feather boas was pretty boss.

My grandmother was completely lost. I had to explain it to her.

My grandma and I are going to go see a play!

-Orange peels are good for marmalade, except for those who find it too bitter in any case.
-They can also be candied or grated to use in baking.
-Only my grandmother eats them straight up.
-A little wine does a bit of relief for tension headaches, but doesn't make them go away.
-I'm a lightweight.
-Having special relaxation powers unlocked only by wine would be a nice, if silly, superpower. Imagine the superhero: The Lush. Ohno, lookout! Here comes her nemesis Captain Prohibition! Bum-bum-bumm.

The headache is gone! Being outside and breathing air not heavily tainted by floral perfume helped quite a bit. Having tea with actual intellectually stimulating conversationalists also helped- I've had tea with any number of people over the past few days but mostly it's been the same banalities repeated ad nauseam.

Adding things I just learned at dinner tonight:
-Vermouth is some STRONG stuff. I coughed on the slightest sip.
-Red wine is GREAT with meatloaf, and I'm not the slightest bit floaty after that. Is white wine stronger?
-According to my grandmother, raw orange peel is ALSO good after being soaked in vermouth. Hey, whatever floats her boat.

Physically, I'm feeling really nice. Having a gigantic headache lifted like that really feels wonderful, because I still have the memory of the pain to compare with the current relief. I joked around at dinner and made both elderly ladies of the house laugh. Feel as if I should be guilty about being so cheerful, really, but part of the reason I'm here is to bring some cheer. So. I suppose I feel ambiguous about feeling good.

Tomorrow I need to find a jewelers'. Having both watches broken is a bit much.

OK.

Hey friendslist, few questions.

One, sparked by the same grandma who eats potato skins: do you eat the orange peel? 'Cuz I tried the potato skin after about a dozen of you told me how awesome it was, but orange peels strike me as marginally less likely to be good eatin'.

Two, I should totally not be feeling anything after a single glass of wine with dinner, right? Not that I'm feeling much, and what little disorientation there is is easy to compensate for, but the fact that I'm compensating at all is what startled me.

Three, is wine supposed to cure headaches? 'Cause I've had a whopper of a Sunday afternoon headache the likes of which would make Murakami Haruki wince (my grandma watches 60 Minutes without her hearing aid, turning it up to a volume audible down the street, and the kitchen sink in this house emits a high-pitched whine that is apparently inaudible to everyone here but me. That, and there is so much flower perfume in the air I can almost feel it sticking to my skin.) That glass of wine, aside from the slight destabilization, actually made me feel a bit better. Coincidence? I ask you.
